THE CHERRY – SYMBOL OF PASSION AND LOVE
CHERRIES AND CUSTOMS
The cherry has been considered since ancient times as a symbol of passion and love. Which led the church to declare it an impure, forbidden fruit. However, the old custom of the Barbara branches defied it. According to this custom, on Barbara Day (4 December), girls willing to marry placed cherry branches in water-filled vases. Each individual branch received a note on which the name of a potential marriage candidate was written. Whose branch bloomed first should be the chosen one next year. Beautiful custom with our dearest cherry. By the way, according to the custom, there was no marriage if no flowers appeared until Christmas. Probably not even then, if the marriage candidate was not willing to marry!
