BLUEBERRIES ARE PRESSURE-SENSITIVE

WHAT'S WITH THE WHITE COATING ON THE BERRIES?

Blueberries grow in meadows, moors, and shady forests throughout the northern hemisphere. You can find them not only in Northern Europe but also in North America and Asia. Blueberries are very pressure-sensitive, can mold quickly, and can turn bitter as a result! Have you ever wondered about the light milky coating on blueberries? Don’t be puzzled; be happy. It’s a sign that the berries are particularly fresh. This coating, called bloom, protects the berries from drying out and keeps them fresh longer. Tip: Wash blueberries only right before eating them to maintain their freshness.

CASSIS, THE BLACKCURRANT AMONG BLACKCURRANTS

MANY NAMES – ONE FRUIT

Botanically, Ribes nigrum refers to the blackcurrant. In some places, the French term cassis is also used, and in Austria, it is known as Ribisel. The blackcurrant belongs to the gooseberry family. Besides blackcurrants, there are also red and white varieties, which differ not only in appearance but also in taste.

In the Middle Ages, blackcurrants frequently grew in monastery gardens as they were a popular medicinal plant used as an antidote for poisoning, among other things. Many people still value them as a home remedy today. Due to their anti-inflammatory properties, blackcurrants are known as natural cortisone and can help with coughs or hoarseness. Additionally, blackcurrants are believed to support the healthy function of the immune system.
