WHAT IS TRUE AND WHAT IS NOT?

It is often said that coffee removes water from the body and should therefore not be counted as part of your fluid intake. This is not true! According to the DGE (German Nutrition Society), "coffee is an important part of the total daily water intake. In the fluid balance, coffee can generally be treated in the same way as any other drink". The custom in many restaurants of serving coffee with a glass of water is therefore not intended to compensate for any loss of fluids. Just like a glass of water with wine, it is intended to "neutralize" the palate and make the taste buds more receptive to the next sip of coffee.
